Chandan Besha means that the deities in the Jagannath temple are adorned with a paste of sandalwood, which is prepared in the temple complex itself. The besha is specifically meant for summer months and is worn in the month of Baisakh, which signifies the commencement of summer season. It starts on the Akshay Tritiya, the third full moon day and is carried on for the next 42 days. The purpose of the besha is to keep the idols cool in the summer and they deities are offered special food for summer in this besha.
