Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to file Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Jagannath Rasagola instead of Odishara Rasagola after a week of GI tag for “Benglar Rasagola”.
The decision of the government is based on the final report prepared after suggestions from lawyers, experts & Advocate Firms regarding the filing of GI tag.
In a letter to the Additional Chief Secretary, MSME, Director of Industries, it has been said that if the state has written a GI tag against its Bengally counterpart, “Odishara Rasagola”, then it will not be of any use.
The letter said that the possibility of successfully registering for Odishara Rasagola is not very bright. There are so many different types of sweet dishes being prepared in Odisha, so any specific specificity associated with sweets can not be identified. Applying under the name of Odishara Rasagola will not get any benefits or advantages.
Similarly, there is no historical evidence of the Rasagola in the initiative, as in the matter of sweets related to Lord Jagannath, the letter suggested that filing a GI tag for “Jagannath Rasagola” would be an appropriate matter.
It has been mentioned in the letter that the Sri Jagannath Temple Administration (SJETA) or even the Union of service can file for the GI tag on behalf of the State Government.
