The First Floodwater of the Season Released from Hirakud Dam

Sambalpur: The first floodwater of the season of River Mahanadi was released by the authorities from Hirakud Dam here today, in the presence of a huge public gathering.

As per the reports, gate no.7 of the dam was opened by the officials after performing a ‘puja’, which is a ritual followed every year before the release of first floodwater of the season. According to the officials, four gates have been opened till now while three more of them will be opened phases wise.

According to Biswajeet Mohanty, the chief engineer of the dam, “According to the rule, the water level should not rise above 610 feet in the month of July. Therefore, we will try to recede the level to the limit 610 feet whenever it goes beyond that.”

Incessant rain caused by the depression in Bay of Bengal has caused the water level in Hirakud to rise steadily. At present, around 2,14,327 cusec of water is making its way into the reservoir while 20,392 cusec of water is being released, the official stated further.

As a precautionary measure, the people living in these areas have been warned by the authorities not to go into the river for bathing. As the water will be released, the level is likely to go up at an alarming rate with powerful river current.
